BA Lady Cougars secure No. 2 seed

The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars had a powerful run in the South State championship softball tournament. Coming off two wins and a loss (to Clinton) on the weekend, the Lady Cougars beat Centreville Academy, Newton County Academy and Glenbrook. The only loss of the night was again to Clinton, who took home the South State championship.

The Lady Cougars will play in the state championships next week at the Magee Sports Complex as the No. 2 seed.

BA 16, River Oaks 3

The Brookhaven Academy fast-pitch softball team opened South State tournament play Saturday with a 16-3 over River Oaks.

The Lady Cougars had little trouble in the opening game with multiple players tallying multiple hits.  Madi Smith hit two triples and a single, Madison Thompson hit a double and triple, Julie Anna Bartram hit a double and a single, Makayla Martin hit a double, and Kailyn Jordan, Madison Moak, Abeni Fuller, Jana Case and Emily Claire Felder all singled.

Felder picked up  the win on the mound with four strikeouts, one walk and four hits.

BA 5, Amite School Center 2

BA followed up with a 5-2 win over Amite School Center. Madi Smith got the win on the mound with 12 strikeouts. She gave up two walks and six hits.

Jordan, Moak and Smith picked up two singles each. Thompson hit two singles. Cameron Watson hit a double and Bartram hit a single.

BA 14, Centreville 3

BA also made quick work of Centreville Academy with a 14-3 win. Madi Smith pitched three innings, striking out four and giving up five hits and four walks. Emily Claire Felder pitched two innings and and gave up one hit and struck out one.

Felder hit a double and a single, Abeni Fuller hit a double and a single, Jana Case hit two singles, Madison Moak hit two singles, and Kailyn Jordan, Madison Thompson and Cameron Watson hit a single.

BA 10, Newton County Academy 0

In the top of the second, Abeni Fuller got the Lady Cougars on the board with a solo homerun. The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning, where the Lady Cougars scored four runs. Emily Claire Felder hit a stand-up, two-run RBI triple. Kailyn Jordan followed with an RBI single. Madison Moak scored the final run of the inning on an RBI triple.

The Lady Cougars finished off Newton County in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Fuller hit her second homerun of the game in the fifth inning. Brookhaven Academy scored once again on errors by Newton County.

Moak drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt. Jordan and Felder each had an RBI single in the fifth.

Newton County had several chances to break onto the board, but the Lady Cougars’ pitching and defense denied their scoring attempts.

BA 5, Glenbrook 2

The Lady Cougars got on the board first, in the first inning on a sacrifice fly ball by Madi Smith. The score remined 1-0 heading into the third inning. Fuller brought in one run on an RBI single, before Glenbrook could get the final out.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth inning, Glenbrook finally found themselves on the board with an RBI single. The Lady Cougars got that run back in the fifth inning as Moak hit an RBI single. Down 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, Glenbrook closed the gap scoring on errors by the Lady Cougars.

BA secured its win in the seventh inning by scoring two runs. Moak hit an RBI double and Fuller followed with an RBI single to give the Lady Cougars the 5-2 win.
