JACKSON (AP) — A police officer in Jackson was grazed by a bullet while chasing a man.
Jackson police Sgt. Roderick Holmes says police saw a suspicious man near a motel just after midnight Wednesday. Police said the man, identified as 40-year-old Alton Johnson, ran from officers.
Police say he fired a handgun as officers pursued, grazing an unnamed officer’s left arm.
Holmes says the officer was taken to a hospital and later released.
The chase continued with Holmes saying Johnson ascended to the roof of the multi-story motel, again firing. Police later recovered a gun they say Johnson threw away, and finally apprehended Johnson back on the ground.
Police are holding Johnson, charging him with three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.
