It was another tough, close loss for the Wesson Cobras (4-5,0-3) on the road Friday night as West Marion (4-5,2-1) took a 28-20 region victory. With 5 minutes remaining Cobra quarterback Dell Thigpen scored on a 3-yard rushing touchdown to pull his team within 20-19, but the Trojans would block the point-after-kick.

On the ensuing drive Wesson put West Marion in a 4th-and-2 situation. It appeared that the Cobra defense had Trojan quarterback Jeremiah Holmes bottled up for a loss, but Holmes would escape the scrum and race out to a 60-yard touchdown run that put the game away.

Wesson trailed 20-6 at halftime and scored their first points of the second half in the third quarter on a 55-yard rushing score by Thigpen.

“My guys fought hard and made some big plays, but they just made one more,” said Wesson head coach Jeremy Loy. “If we finish the play and get the ball carrier down on the fourth down play, we’re getting the ball back with plenty of time left and only trailing by one. That’s a tackle that we’ve got to make in the future.”

Wesson hosts Tylertown for their final home game next Friday at Stone Stadium on the campus of Co-Lin.
