Most BARL pet adoptions are free this Thanksgiving weekend
The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League is offering a Black Friday bargain that sounds too good to be true.
The volunteers at the no-kill shelter are offering free adoptions for pets from noon to 4 p.m. Friday as well as the same time Saturday and Sunday.
With the help of Zappos for Good and the North Shore Animal League America, BARL is hosting “Home for the Pawlidayz” for three days. During the promotion, Zappos will cover the adoption fee of select dogs and cats.
At least 20 dogs are on the list and more will probably be added, said volunteer Anna Giust as she tried to balance reindeer antlers on the heads of Max and Jezebel for a photo shoot.
Others up for adoption include Inessa, Beethoven, Fanlie, Foxie, Iowa, J-Stray, Smilesalot, Jon Lucky, Krumpet and Krumpus.
Adoption fees are normally $85 for dogs. That includes neuter, shots and microchip. The cost is normally $75 for cats. Because of Zappos and North Shore’s generosity, many of the animals at BARL’s adoption center may find homes this weekend.
“These animals know that somethings coming up,” said BARL President Lu Becker. “They’re getting excited. They’re looking forward to the weekend.”
Becker has a soft spot for all the animals.
“We really do have some fabulous dogs who need a home,” she said. “They need to go home for Christmas. That’s their Christmas dream, to find a family.”
Photos of the dogs and cats can be found on facebook.com/brookhavenanimalrescueleague.
There’s Max, who is about a year old and is very loving. He can be a little shy but warms up quickly, Becker said.
Foxie is a 5-month-old Shepherd/hound mix. She’s a little shy and needs a home with love and attention, but she’s absolutely adorable and sweet.
Woody is a 3-year-old collie/heeler mix and Inessa is 7-month curr/retriever mix. She’s is very playful and energetic.
Jon Lucky is a rottweiler mix. The 10-month-old loves children and gets along well with other dogs, though he’s not fond of chickens.
Fanlie is 6 months old and has one blue eye and one dark brown eye. She’s sweet and loves to be petted, Becker said.
All of the cats are up for grabs, said volunteer Julie Montalvo.
