Although they got off to a slow start, Wesson’s defense showed up late and their offense won a close game against West Lincoln Friday night by final score of 52-47.

Offense was the name of the game, as both Wesson and West Lincoln kept pace with each other until the second half, when Wesson’s offense was took over.

West Lincoln started out strong, going on an eight-point run before Wesson was able to find the net and begin cutting into the lead. The Cobras trailed 10-5 with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter. West Lincoln threatened to pull away in the second quarter, but Wesson refused to back down and finally took the lead on the foul line to head to the locker room in front 24-22.

The Bears started the third quarter by winning some early rebounds and got back on top, but Wesson’s defense started making trouble and the Cobras ended the third quarter with a slim, 36-34 lead.

The teams traded the lead back and forth early in the fourth period, but Wesson started pulling down more rebounds and stretching the lead just enough to keep the pressure on West Lincoln. The Cobras’ defense ramped up hard with three minutes to go, and the Bears had to start fouling. The plan didn’t work and Wesson took over on the free throw line to put the game away late.

“I’m proud of the boys and the way they played in control. This was a great win,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman.

Shemar Dickerson led Wesson with 24 points. J.D. Allen had 14 points, and Kenner Bizot had seven points. Brian Thomas had four points, while Darrian Gibson had two. Slay Acy finished the night with one point.

Chase Owen led West Lincoln with 10 points. Le’darrius Jones, Adam Martinez, and Garrison Coffey each had nine points. Karlton Bird had six points. Donterrius Taylor and Keshon Byrd finished the night with two points each.

West Lincoln will be in action Thursday and Friday as they take part in the Natchez Cathedral Christmas Classic.
