Brookhaven Academy took out Hartfield Academy in less than five innings Saturday, winning a mercy-shortened game 13-2.
The Cougars led 2-0 going into the top of the second and the Hartfield Hawks evened the score on three hits. The offense went back to work plating runners, topped off by a two-run homerun blast by O’Neill Burgos in the bottom of the frame.
Tucker Watts led the way at the plate with a grand slam in the bottom of the third. After a walk to Taylor Freeny, a two-out single by Brady Spring advancing to second on the throw home, and an intentional walk to power hitter Burgos, Watts went deep to left center, recording his first homerun of the season and giving the Cougars an impressive 11-2 lead going into the fourth inning. Watts also added a single to his day as Spring and Dawson Flowers each had a double and a single.
Hitting safely for the Cougars were Nick Ogden and Levi Smith.
On the mound for the start for BA was eighth-grader Caston Thompson, who threw four innings, gave up five hits for two runs and recorded six strikeouts and three walks. Nick Ogden came in at the top of the fifth to close the game, allowing one hit and recording three outs on just eight pitches.
The Cougars will be back in action Tuesday, beginning with junior varsity at 4:30 p.m. and varsity at 6:30 p.m.
