Tropical system from Gulf may make for a wet Memorial Day weekend in South Mississippi
MIAMI — A tropical disturbance that is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico this week may develop into a tropical depression and dump heavy rain on South Mississippi, including the Brookhaven area.
The five-day outlook from the National Hurricane Center says a tropical weather system could reach the Gulf Coast this weekend somewhere between southeast Louisiana and Florida. The weather system will likely make for a wet Memorial Day weekend on the coast and in parts of South Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida.
The forecast for Brookhaven this weekend includes a 70-percent chance of rain on Friday and Saturday, increasing to an 80-percent chance on Sunday. The chance of rain on Memorial Day is forecast at 70 percent.
Forecasters say the system has a 40-percent chance of developing into at least a tropical depression within five days.
