Groups give school supplies

Today is the last day to donate school supplies and gently-used clothing for a giveaway hosted by Brookhaven Ward 2 Alderman Shannon Moore, former Crimson Tide linebacker Jimmy Johns and the St. Mark Masonic Lodge No. 24 and its Electra Chapter.

Moore’s wife, Valerie, a Brookhaven Parks and Recreation employee, was talking with neighbors last year and discovered a common theme among a lot of single mothers and parents of school-age children. They were grateful for the local organizations that were providing school supplies for their children, but they still had a need for clothes and shoes. So they went to their church and friends for help and began asking for assistance through Facebook.

They were able to provide clothing and school supplies to several needy families.

This year, when it came time to organize the giveaway, they realized that by joining with others with the same ideas, they could help more people.

The Moores are working with Johns, St. Mark and Electra to host the giveaway July 28 at Fannie Mullins School.

They need gently-used clothes for children, women and men and school supplies for students in kindergarten through 12th-grade.

“It’s organizations coming together to give together,” Moore said.

The giveaway is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mullins. There will be activities for children and food at the free event.

“We want people to come out and have a good time with their family,” she said.

To donate items, call or text Moore at 601-695-0556 and she’ll organize pickup.

“We want to make it as convenient as possible,” she said.
