The Brookhaven VFW is honoring the Patriot Guard Riders at its open house planned for Nov. 3.

“They do so much for our fallen vets,” said Post 2618 Commander Greg Marlow.

The annual event will be held at the Capt. Danny D. Entrican Post at 728 Industrial Park Road NE from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The VFW post hosts the open house as a fundraiser and also relies on donations and proceeds from renting their building for events to cover program costs.

Last year, the open house raised about $6,000 from plate and raffle ticket sales, Marlow said.

This year, though, they’re trying something different. While the menu is the same — jambalaya — the lunch is free. A donation bucket will be set up for those who want to contribute for their meal and anyone else’s, he said.

VFW members are already selling tickets for the raffle. The drawing will be at the open house for a Howa 1500 .308 full-barrel rifle for first prize, 200 gallons of gas for second prize and a $100 gift card to a hardware store for third prize. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

The open house will also include activities for children.

The Brookhaven VFW — named in memory of Capt. Danny D. Entrican — meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at 728 Industrial Park, and they are currently hoping to connect with some of Lincoln County’s younger veterans.  Membership is open to any man or woman who served overseas in a combat role.

“We always need younger folks,” Marlow said.

The post will also host a 5K run/walk Nov. 17 to support the VFW National Home for Children. Preregistration is $20 and includes a medal and T-shirt. The last day to preregister is at the open house event.
