(AP) — Authorities say a north Mississippi jail inmate stole a pistol and killed himself.

Tony Farese, a lawyer speaking for the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, tells local news outlets that the shooting happened Tuesday outside the jail in Holly Springs.

The unnamed inmate was a trusty, granted privileges for good behavior or work performed.

Farese says a department truck was locked, but the inmate entered and found a pistol. He shot himself, with a bullet breaking a window and sounding an alarm that alerted deputies.

Farese says the inmate, jailed in Marshall County since March on a burglary charge, was due for release in August. But Tuesday, detectives from Senatobia say they questioned the inmate about an embezzlement case. Investigators believe fear of more jail time may have prompted the suicide.
