A hands-on children’s summer camp that features animals is exactly what the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League thinks should be on families’ radar.

BARL’s Animal Adventures Kids Camp is set to begin July 8 at 9 a.m. at Exchange Club Park. The three-hour-a-day Monday-through-Friday experience is geared toward children from as young as age 4 up through students in sixth grade.

Camp coordinator and BARL volunteer Bertha Williams said the children can expect to hear from presenters from the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, the Critter Catcher, the Animal Garden Petting Zoo and the Central Mississippi Turtle Rescue. Some of BARL’s animals will also make visits to the camp.

The rescue league is also recruiting junior counselors to serve as helpers for the camp. Students from seventh grade up are asked to volunteer.

“BARL’s Kids Camp is both entertaining and educational. Bertha does a great job at teaching kids about empathy and caring for all of God’s creatures,” said BARL board member Rusty Adcock.

Registration is $75 and includes a camp T-shirt, crafts and snacks. Forms can be found online at barl.net, at PetSense in Brookhaven or at BARL’s Adoption Center.
