(AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board is checking maintenance records and gathering other information about a single-engine airplane that crashed in northern Mississippi and killed the 18-year-old pilot.

Investigator Ed Malinowski says Monday the board’s final report could take months.

The Cessna 172 belonged to the Mississippi Civil Air Patrol, and student pilot Lake Little of Starkville was a cadet master sergeant.

She took off Saturday from Golden Triangle Regional Airport in Columbus. A flight plan showed she was supposed to go Oxford and return to Columbus. The crash happened on the Ole Miss Golf Course, near Oxford-University Airport.

The Civil Air Patrol’s commander, Maj. Gen. Mark Smith, says Little was training for her private pilot certificate.

Little was supposed to compete this month in Mississippi’s Miss Hospitality pageant.
