Stay cool: NWS heat advisory for today

Published 9:50 pm Monday, August 12, 2019

It’s hot outside. You already knew that. But the National Weather Service is warning that the stifling heat will be a problem through Tuesday evening.

The area is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Highs will climb to the mid-to-high 90s with heat index values approaching 115 degrees.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are more likely if people don’t take precautions.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of high temps and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

“You are more likely to develop a heat illness quicker in this type of weather, when it’s really humid and hot,” said Gary Chatelain, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Shreveport.

Temperatures are expected to cool slightly later this week, with highs in the low-90s.

Local emergency officials have responded to heat-related illness already this week.

Extreme heat results in the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards, according to the federal government.

To avoid heat illness, drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors. Older adults and those already sick are at a greater risk of heat illness.

Other tips to avoid over-heating:

• Wear light clothing.

• Never leave people or pets in a closed car.

• Watch for heat cramps or heat stroke.

• Find places in your community where you can stay cool (public library, senior citizen center).
