With a car show, music, games and plenty of food, Monticello is in for a fun Saturday.

The Cruisin’ the Pearl at Atwood Open Car Show will take place at Atwood Park on 1362 East Broad St. in Monticello.

“We have a full day,” said Lane Thornhill, Lawrence County Hospital purchasing director. “We’re going to have live bands. We’re going to have some DJ’ing. A lot of child friendly activities.”

Thornhill said registration for the car show begins at 9 a.m. and will continue until noon. Registration for the car show will be $25 and will cover the cost of a wrist band.

For spectators, entry at the gate is $5, but according to organizer Lynnsey Ratliff Clements, children under 6 can get in free.

“Five dollars covers everything except food, T-shirts, merchandise and raffle tickets,” Clements said in a Facebook post. She went on to say the entry fee includes access to view the cars, water slides and games.

There will be an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and the day of fun will continue until 4 p.m. Awards for the car show will include Mayor’s Choice and Best in Show. The show will finish with a parade through downtown Monticello.

The National Guard will be bringing in the games, and Thornhill said the local fire department will set up an obstacle course for children and adults.

Thornhill said he pitched the idea to his administrator, Phillip Langston, back in April.

“He was in agreement and it just grew from there,” he said.

Money from the event will go to Wounded Warriors of Mississippi, Batson Children’s Hospital and the Lawrence County First Responders. Thornhill said they plan to make it an annual event, and the response has been positive with people from out of state planning to attend.

“We plan on having a lot of fun,” Thornhill said, “If weather permits, which we think it will, a lot of clean family fun.”
