Public library says bring on the ugly — sweaters, that is

The best, worst kind of sweater is a dreadfully ugly Christmas sweater.

To bring a little of that Christmas fun to Brookhaven, the Lincoln County Public Library will host an Ugly Sweater Craft Night. The event will be held Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m.

“All you have to do is bring a sweater,” Head Librarian Kasie Brown said. “We’re going to make it ugly.”

Ugly Sweater Craft Night is a brand new program for the library. Brown said she got the idea from posts she saw on Pinterest, a social media website where viewers can pin up ideas that interest them onto virtual boards.

The library will have plenty of tacky decorations to go around, and the library is encouraging  the public to turn their sweaters into something that is truly, fantastically terrible.

All ages are welcome to visit the library to transform their sweaters into kitschy Christmas works of art, but it does follow the After School Lego Club from 4 to 5 p.m., which is open to elementary-aged children. Brown suggested it would be fun for parents to take their children from the club to the sweater party.

Both the After School Lego Club and Ugly Sweater Craft Night are free for the public to attend, though people should bring a sweater if they want to make it ugly. When it comes to sweaters, Brown said it’s best to be frugal.

“Don’t spend a lot on a sweater,” Brown said. “It’s going to be ugly no matter what — the whole business is doing tacky sweaters.”
