(AP) — An inmate was pronounced dead Monday in the hospital of the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, the state Department of Corrections said in a news release.
Robert Floyd McGuire, 56, was taken to the hospital after he was found unresponsive inside the prison. He was serving a life sentence for a 2012 murder conviction in the 2011 shooting death of his girlfriend in Brandon.
An autopsy will be done. The Sunflower County coroner said in the Department of Corrections news release that there were no obvious signs of trauma on McGuire’s body.
McGuire was at least the 39th inmate to die in a Mississippi prison since late December. The state prison system came under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department after several inmates were killed or injured during outbursts of violence in late December and early January.
