GREENWOOD (AP) — A Mississippi man with previous convictions has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of his former girlfriend.
Darriel Gilbert, 50, of Greenwood, was charged Friday in the death of Angela McDowell, 48, the Greenwood Commonwealth reported. She died Tuesday after she was shot multiple times at her home.
Gilbert was also charged Friday with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and five counts of kidnapping. The newspaper did not report whether he is represented by an attorney. He remained jailed without bond Friday.
Police said Gilbert forced himself inside McDowell’s home and held four people at gunpoint until she arrived.
Gilbert was sentenced to 20 years in prison on June 5, 1991, after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the shooting death earlier that year of a man in Greenwood, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Gilbert received a 10-year sentence in 1995 for an aggravated assault conviction tied to a 1994 attack in Sunflower County.
Gilbert was imprisoned at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman and his state supervision ended in March 2009, according to Department of Corrections records.
