COVID cases continue to surge in Mississippi

Mississippi continues to break COVID-19 case records as hospitals begin to see a surge from the holidays.

On Friday, the Mississippi Department of Health released its latest coronavirus numbers. In Lincoln County, there were 2,774 total cases and 81 total deaths. The area had 170 total long-term care cases and 36 total LTC deaths.

Statewide, there were 2,175 new cases, 40 new deaths and 221 current LTC outbreaks. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Mississippi has had 233,665 total cases and 5,101 total COVID-19 related deaths.

Hospitalizations keep climbing as the holiday surge begins to appear in hospitals around the state. As of Friday, there were 1,387 patients hospitalized with the virus, with 357 of those patients in intensive care and 205 patients on ventilators.

As of Wednesday, King’s Daughters Medical Center had 36 total staffed beds, 18 confirmed COVID-19 positive patients and 15 available staffed beds. The hospital’s intensive care unit has seven patients and no available beds.
