The Mississippi National Guard is sending troops to Washington D.C. in preparation of the presidential inauguration Wednesday.
Troops being sent from Mississippi will work to keep the event safe and secure in order to allow for a peaceful transition of authority.
While the number of troops from Mississippi being sent has not been reported, there are expected to be more than 20,000 troops total, according to a recent story from the Washington Post.
Gov. Tate Reeves’ press secretary, Bailey Martin, said the governor wanted to send troops for the Inauguration even before the incident at the Capitol.
“There is no finer security force than the Mississippi National Guard, and they are always ready to assist national security if called upon,” Martin said.
President-elect Joe Biden is set to be inaugurated as the 46th president of the United States on Jan. 20.
