A significant winter storm is affecting Brookhaven today. Heavy accumulations of ice, sleet and snow will result in dangerous travel conditions as well as downed trees and power lines, according to the National Weather Service.
Impacts will likely be worst where freezing rain and sleet accumulate quickly. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all of the area. Please use caution if venturing out but avoid this at all costs.
Additional accumulations of snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected across northeast Louisiana, far southeast Arkansas, and much of Mississippi through Monday night. These amounts are subject to change as the event continues.
A surge of dangerously cold arctic air is expected to reach the area late tonight and linger through Wednesday. This will be a long duration of very cold conditions and dangerous wind chill readings as low as several degrees below zero with the coldest temperatures expected Tuesday morning.
