The 1971 graduating class of Brookhaven High School reunited for the first time on its 50th anniversary at BHS’s recent home-coming. “While the desegregation of schools in Mississippi had been in effect for a few years, only a few black students had decided to attend Brookhaven High School. The majority remained at Alexander High School. The summer of 1970, it became mandatory that all schools in Mississippi become fully integrated,” a class social media post said. “That school year was a rough one, especially for the senior class. However, we survived and completed the year, reaching graduation. … There have been re-unions throughout the years, but always separate. (Recently) many of us returned for the very first time in 50 years to celebrate that momentous occasion. It was a wonderful reunion! Many of us getting reacquainted for the first time in 50 years.”
