Published 12:00 pm Wednesday, February 16, 2022
The Brookhaven Camellia Society will host its 69th annual show Saturday at The Homestead Whittington Farm at 946 US 51S, the former Brookhaven Nurseries. Entries may be submitted from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
There will be a plant sale by Mizell’s Camellia Hill Nurseries of Folsom from 8:30 a.m. The show and the plant sale will be at “The Event Center” behind the Whittingtons’ home there on the estate.
The annual competition is open to all. The Brookhaven Camellia Society has been noted by the American Camellia Society as a very active group with membership continuing to grow year after year. The annual show attracts participants and visitors from as far away as Georgia and Texas. It has become a cultural magnet for our community.
There are so many camellias growing in yards and gardens here in Brookhaven and the surrounding area. The camellia, an evergreen which blooms during the cooler months, has been popular both in town and at country homes. Should you know the variety those can be entered accordingly in their category of the show. However, to encourage more participation, those blooms that the variety isn’t known may be placed at the Novice Table. It is very simple with categories for reds, pinks, whites, striped and others.
Like the general competition there will be prizes for these also. There is no longer a reason to be reluctant to enter. So anyone may win. There are more than 80 prizes awarded at the show. There are also youth categories for K-12 to encourage future enthusiasts.
Viewing of approximately 1000 blooms will be open to the public after judging from 2 till 5. Participation in the show and the public viewing are free thanks to the generosity of sponsors. Don’t miss this opportunity to share the blooms from your garden, see so many other blooms brought from around the region, and add plants to your landscaping at the plant sale.
