Sweet & Petite is not only in a new building, but the business has a new setup as well.

Tamasha Smith opened shop over on Justice Street about a year ago, but once the company grew out of the space, she found herself checking out the building at 505 Hwy. 51 South and knew this was where she’d expand her business.

“I was getting gasoline one day and just saw this place was available,” Smith said. “After talking to the owner, I kind of just knew this was where God had led me. We’d been so blessed so far, so I feel as though this was a good move.”

And to top off the whole situation, Smith’s aunt, Makeita Byrd, had a creative way to make even more use of the larger building.

They created a selfie museum.

For $15 for each person under 11 and $25 for ages 12 and up, visitors can choose from a variety of decorated rooms full of fun props. In the mood to take selfies of yourself on a stand-up bed like you see in commercials? Sweet & Petite’s selfie museum has just the spot for you.

Perhaps you’d rather a lodge look, complete with a faux bear rug? They’ve got that too, as well as a beach room, a gold fixture room and more.

“My aunt has always been so creative, and she came up with all of this,” Smith said. While she was speaking, three different customers came in for sweet treats. After all, this is a bakery first and foremost.

Sweet & Petite is “a scratch-made bakery and local one-stop bakery,” the company’s Facebook page states. The menu includes petite chess squares (a cream cheese dessert bar with a butter crust), petite Turtle brownies, specialty browns of vanilla or chocolate, cinnamon rolls, cookies, cheesecake and cake slices.

Smith’s business evolved over time. “I have been baking all of my life,” she said. “Since I was 10.” After trying a career in social work, she followed her first love to culinary arts school in Atlanta, interned in Jackson, decorated cakes for WalMart and then worked for Georgia Blue for two years.

Sweet & Petite specializes in custom cakes for your next party or special day, as well as walk-in availability in a display case of most everything on the menu.

Sweet & Petite is offering a special customer appreciation day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can enjoy face painting, grilled food, free Easter-themed treats and an Easter-themed selfie room, where entry is $15, with same-day photos available, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
