JACKSON — The National Weather Service in Jackson forecasts a marginal threat of severe weather in Southwest Mississippi late Thursday afternoon.
Isolated severe storms are possible with damaging wind gusts and isolated quarter sized hail. These threats are likely from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Southwest Mississippi is also in an elevated risk for heat stress through Saturday. Brookhaven is currently under a heat advisory until Friday night at 8 p.m. The heat index could be as high as 107 Thursday afternoon and the heat index Friday is forecast to hit 104.
Heat and humidity could cause heat illness to occur and is more likely with prolonged exposure. NWS said in the advisory people should drink water, stay in air conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check in on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
Heat stress risk will continue throughout the week as the heat index could climb from 100 to 110 degrees.
There are ways to beat the heat in Brookhaven. Splash pads are open at Bethel Park, City Park and Bi-Centinial Park if you are looking for a way to cool off.
