BROOKHAVEN — Children’s Librarian Patty Shelton was shocked to discover ghosts all over the Lincoln, Lawrence, Franklin Regional library Monday morning when she arrived for work. Spooky sprites and ghoulish ghosts lurk throughout the library.
The library is calling on the ghostbusters of Lincoln County to find the dozen phantoms from October 10 to October 31. There is a reward on the line for people who find all 12 ghosts but it will come with a little work.
Shelton said the ghosts are spread out around the library and correspond with a worksheet to guide ghostbusters on their quest.
“I have cut out foam ghosts and each ghost is on a form and corresponds to a book. All people have to do is find the ghost, it is simple,” she said. “It is throughout the library including the teen and adult sections. We had kids doing it all day since it is fall break so they have been busy hunting the ghosts.”
A stack of about 30 orange forms sat at the front desk next to a jar with the haunting prizes. Shelton said the ghost hunt is similar to a scavenger hunt and should introduce new book titles to those who participate. All people have to do is locate a staff member to learn how they can start the quest.
It is just one of many events planned this fall. Shelton said they will have a trick-or-treat in the library from 5 to 7 p.m. on Halloween, Oct. 31, and on Oct. 22 they will have a story walk. A story walk is where a story is illustrated on boards and people can walk through and read.
The book this year is the Gruffalo by Julie Donaldson. Story walk will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and families should be able to have a picnic outside the library if the weather is nice. It will re-run the week of thanksgiving too if people miss it. Additionally, The Library hosts a gingerbread house building contest the week of thanksgiving.
Storytime is at 10 a.m. this Wednesday and will feature “The Little Engine that Could.” Staff expect the turnout of kids for the ghost hunting to be high that day.
Aubrey Brown finished the hunt and was enjoying her treat before she left for the day. The hunt is hardly time consuming.
“It was fun. Some of the ghosts were hard to find but it was pretty easy,” Brown said. “It took maybe about 20 minutes to complete. It was a lot of fun.”
