Freezing cold, gusty winds are on the way

BROOKHAVEN — It will be dangerously cold this weekend according to the National Weather Service in Jackson. Lincoln County is in the significant warning area with lows less than 15 degrees and highs less than 32 degrees in the central and Southwest portion of the state. Depending on where you are this weekend, the wind chill could make it feel -10 degrees to -1 degrees. 

Wind speed will be about 20 to 25 mph Friday morning with gusts close to 40 mph. Gusts could be as high as 30 mph which poses a risk for any outside activity. Large trucks are at risk of being blown over and watercraft could face treacherous water conditions. Wind could make waters choppy. 

NWS Jackson said there is no risk of ice build up from rain on roadways but people should still be cautious if they have to travel. Light rain is expected from 3p.m. to 5p.m., and expect some sleet or flurries Thursday night. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be sunny. The chance of rain Thursday night is 50 percent.

Friday is forecast to have a high of 27 with a wind chill of -1. Friday night will be partly cloudy with a low of 16. Saturday the high is 32 and the low will be 17.
