BROOKHAVEN — Rainfall has swamped Southwest Mississippi this week and more rain continues to fall as rivers, creeks, bayous, ponds and ditches swell. NWS Jackson forecasts one to three inches of rain today which could inundate low lying areas and cause more flooding in addition to the flash flooding experienced last Tuesday.
The forecast warns moderate local river flooding is possible and minor river flooding would continue with the steady rainfall. This risk is from now until the night. Brookhaven has a 100 percent chance of precipitation of the rest of the day.
January was a wet month with 7.32 inches of rain in total. Wednesday saw a total of 0.18 inches of rain. NWS Jackson reports .06 inches of rain so far Thursday but more is expected. Anywhere between a half to three quarter inches of rain is forecast with localized rainfall being more.
If you encounter a flooded roadway remember to turn around and don’t drown. Flood waters could wash your vehicle off of the road way or wash out the road beneath the water’s surface. Be careful while driving home this afternoon.
Friday should be a sunny day but will have gusty winds between 15 mph to high gusts of 25 mph.
