Weather Update: Severe storms drop deluge, temperatures

BROOKHAVEN — Rain started to fall around 4:53 a.m. Friday morning according to the National Weather Service and has since dumped a deluge of 1.13 inches of rain flooding low lying areas in local pastures. NWS in Jackson forecasts the rest of the day to have a 90 percent chance of rain.

Rainfall amounts are forecast to be between three quarters of an inch to one inch from now until nightfall. Pressure fell last night but has started to rise a little bit this morning.

Temperatures will fall to 49 degrees by 4 p.m. and the low tonight is forecast to be 39 degrees. A north wind is blowing steady at 10 mph with gusts possibly reaching 25 mph.

Brace yourselves for an ice-cold Sunday night. NWS Jackson warns the area is at a significant risk of a freeze Sunday night and into Monday morning. Temperatures are forecast to drop to 32 degrees or lower for three hours or more. Unprotected vegetation could be damaged by this freeze.

Magnolia Electric is the only power company reporting customers without power in Lincoln County. According to MEP’s outage map, 58 customers are without power this morning. Southwest Electric reports one customer in Copiah County is without power this morning.
