BROOKHAVEN — Thunderstorms Monday morning brought cool temperatures to Lincoln County. The National Weather Service in Jackson reports the temperature as of 10:50 a.m. was 71 degrees in Brookhaven but by the end of the day the high will hit 95 with a heat index of 109.
Monday is just the beginning of dangerous heat this summer. NWS Jackson warns heat exhaustion, heat stress and heat stroke will be imminent with prolonged outside activity. Heat indices are calculated from the air temperature and relative humidity using a complex formula but the National Weather Service has a user friendly calculator where you just need the air temperature and relative humidity.
Tonight’s low will drop to a balmy 76 degrees before jumping up to a high of 96 Tuesday and a heat index of 112. The chance of precipitation is around 30 percent Tuesday.
Wednesday’s high will be 99, Thursday’s high will hit 101 and Friday will hit 102 degrees. Heat indexes could be in the 110 to 115 range meaning outdoor activities could be very dangerous. People can prepare for the heat now by staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities.
