BROOKHAVEN — Jack’s Dessert Shop is closed, but another delicious treat will soon take Jack’s place. Mississippi Ice Daiquiri Shop will be the next tenant of a space adjacent to Serio’s Pizza on Whitworth Avenue.
A laminated sign in the window says the Daiquiri Shop is coming soon. Katie Nations, Program Director at Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce, said she knows the owner is Mark LeBlanc. He confirmed he was the owner of the business.
“I grew up in Louisiana and managed a few daiquiri bars in Baton Rouge, so I’m a little familiar with the operation. I like people and love what is going on in downtown Brookhaven,” LeBlanc said. “I hope to bring something new and different to downtown that people can enjoy.”
The Mississippi Department of Health has not issued a restaurant permit yet. Mississippi’s Alcoholic Beverage Control does not show a current liquor license issued for the establishment either.
LeBlanc said he has applied for a food permit which must be granted before the liquor license is issued. He said they hope to open by October 5th with seven daiquiri machines and daiquiri flavors. Mississippi Ice will offer a non-alcoholic or virgin daiquiri option.
He said Mississippi Ice plans to serve bar food in addition to liquor and beer in bottle or can. Mississippi Ice will have a sports bar theme and will be open 4 to 10 p.m. everyday, with the exception of Saturdays.
LeBlanc said Mississippi Ice will be open all day Saturday.
“It was just the right location, environment and time to do this. I had discussed this with the owner of the building Carl Craig a few different ideas to lease that space ever since Jack’s closed,” LeBlanc said. “I had owned and sold a packaged ice company that was in Brookhaven for several years and kept the corporation name Mississippi Ice. That is the origin of the name.”
