East Lincoln Wildfire is contained

EAST LINCOLN — A wildfire in Lincoln County is finally contained after two days of intense fighting Sunday. Mississippi Forestry Commission said the fire grew into the night Saturday and continued Sunday morning breaking out of contained areas.

Smoke from a wildfire burning in East Lincoln near the community of Ruth could be seen from Jayess Saturday. The fire is near Garnet Trail, Terry Trail and China Grove.

Mississippi Forestry Commission reports the fire grew to 300 acres. It jumped fire lanes and crossed roads a few times. Rutland, Gunnell, Sauls and Bronze Roads all had fire damage properties along them. As of 9 pm fire units have left the scene with flames contained. Monticello Fire Services assisted in the fire fighting along with Lincoln County Volunteer Fire Departments.

Emergency Management Agency Director Chris Reid said crews were fighting the flames and using dozers to create fire breaks. The fire is the third wildfire this week in Lincoln and Lawerence Counties.

Fire could spread quickly with dry conditions and wind gusts. Three structures were threatened by the fire but there are no reports of damage to homes at this time form the Mississippi Forestry Commission.

A burn ban is in effect with no exceptions right now. Please do not attempt to burn anything.
