BROOKHAVEN — Her energy and passion stood out on the volleyball court at Brookhaven High School close to where The Dart landed Thursday afternoon. Sierra Edwards is a native of Brookhaven and a multi-sport athlete.
She is a senior and has grown up in the Brookhaven School District. Edwards plays two sports, is on the cheer team and is a member of the Ole Brook band.
She said she balances school with extra curricular activities by getting all of her work done in class. When she gets home she eats and goes to bed.
“When I get home I’m tired,” Edwards said. “I’ve been in band since sixth grade. My sister did percussion so I decided to do something different and tried out for clarinet. I’ve been in band since sixth grade and it really tests me. It gets hot in the summertime.”
The upcoming annual Homecoming production will feature students performing skits. Edwards said this year’s theme is Road Trip and she will be dancing in the performance. Last year, Ole Brook did “The Wizard of Oz” for the homecoming production.
The senior started playing volleyball when the program first began at Brookhaven three years ago. She has a lot of fun on the court.
Once her volleyball season comes to an end Edwards will be running track. She won a state title in the hurdles last year and helped her team win the overall state championship.
“Track helps me on the court because I can move easily. I’m good with lateral movement,” Edwards said. “I want to go to college and run track. I will study to become a pediatrician. I just love kids and I’ve been helping with kids. My mom is a nurse and my whole family is involved in nursing.”
At the end of the year Edwards will walk down the sideline and accept her diploma. She will join several hundred students in tossing her cap into the air and starting a new chapter in her life.
“I will miss the fans and their support,” Edwards said. “They support every single sport. It is really good that they support people they don’t know.”
