BROOKHAVEN — Alexander Junior High celebrated a new field house and Lipsey Middle School celebrated four new classrooms with a ribbon cutting Thursday morning. Representatives of Brookhaven School District made stops at the schools and invited kids to join in the celebration.
Lipsey Middle School added four new classrooms in an addition to the school. A section of hallway with glass block windows brightens the entrance to the new addition. One of the new classrooms is technically a data room right now as teachers meet there to game plan for success.
Three of the other classrooms are for language arts as students go through each language arts classroom. Lipsey Principal Rita Robinson said the addition was needed.
“It took care of a lot of overcrowding. We work collaboratively in language arts too,” Robinson said. “They can work together now. They made a change to where every sixth grade language arts teacher teaches every student. We have more space for our teachers too. We really like that.”

Air Conditioning may not sound like much but it is a world of difference for Alexander Junior High’s football program. Players and coach alike spoke to the comforts of Alexander’s new football field house.
EJ Henderson, head coach of Alexander Junior High, said he remembers when all the program had was t-shirts, shorts and heat for practices. Now his team can meet in the field house, get dressed and go 10 steps out the door to practice.
“It is a great resource and a place to go,” Henderson said. “We aren’t in smaller classrooms anymore. This gives us a place to go over plays right before a game and we can fit all 75 players in here. Locker rooms aren’t big but we like that it makes them get dressed and come out quickly. We meet real quick and go right to the practice field.”
