BOGUE CHITTO — Bobcat basketball player DeMya Porter signed with Southern University in the new basketball gymnasium at Bogue Chitto Wednesday. Porter is a forward for the Bobcats and was selected by Capitol Sports Mississippi as one of the top players to watch this season.

Porter, a lifelong Bogue Chitto resident, will go to Southern University in Baton Rouge. She is just a part of a family athletic legacy at Bogue Chitto, head coach Marc Howard said.

“I’m really excited for the next step and what I’m going to do,” Porter said. “I thank God for putting me in this position. I’m excited for next year. I went there on a visit and I liked the opportunity to play there. They have a good hands-on staff there.”

Porter is not sure what exactly she will study at Southern University. It will likely be a field where she can earn good money, she said.

Basketball is the only sport Porter plays. She is a cheerleader but outside of those two activities she doesn’t do much else.

Porter is relatively new to the game of basketball. Porter’s parents made her do a basketball camp at Co-Lin in sixth grade. She hated it. They made her try basketball again in seventh grade and by ninth grade she fell in love with the game and the love blossomed.

“I love the relationships I have built and the opportunities to see so many different things and experience different things,” Porter said. “It brought me good friends and some of the people you play against will become your friends. My dream is to keep playing basketball after college and maybe go overseas and play. There is limited opportunity in the WNBA but overseas I could travel and play.”
