Rain is likely Thursday evening, severe weather possible

BROOKHAVEN — Thursday will start out sunny and end soaking wet. National Weather Service in Jackson forecasts the rain to begin after 5 p.m.

Rain is likely today with a 70 percent chance of rain. wind speeds will be around 5 to 10 mph and increase to 15 and 20 mph in the afternoon. Gusts could reach 25 mph during the day.

Thursday night will be windy and filled with showers. The chance of precipitation is 90 percent with three quarters of an inch to a full inch expected. Wind will be around 20 to 25 mph and gusts could hit 40mph. The low will rise from 55 degrees 63 into the night.

Friday has a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. This pairs with the expected severe weather threat for the area starting Thursday night into Friday. The marginal risk of severe weather will start around 2 a.m. Friday and go to noon. Isolated severe storms are possible, a tornado can not be ruled out and damaging wind gusts are expected.

Thursday night’s gusty winds of 40 mph could cause limbs to break and fall. Weakened trees from the drought and bugs could also fall in those winds. High profile vehicles will also be unstable at times in the gusts. Drive safely from 7 p.m. Thursday night to 5 a.m. Friday.

Brookhaven will still have the annual Christmas Parade starting at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
