LOYD STAR — Caden White and Abby Burnette inked their athletic futures Friday morning in the Loyd Star gym. White will play golf in college while Burnette will play softball.

White’s parents are Scotty and Brandy White. He signed with Southwest Community College because they offered him a chance to keep playing golf. It is a game he started playing three or four years ago.

“It feels great to sign. I didn’t think it would happen but it did,” White said. “It was a sport I picked up and I fell in love with it. I loved the difficulty of it and I had to work hard to finally get good. I went every day in the summer. It makes you happy when you get rewarded.”

Signing with Southwest means he will get to be closer to home and family. White is not finished with his time at Loyd Star just yet. He plays baseball and soccer and has some more games to play for the Hornets.

White said he is not sure what he will study at Southwest.

Burnette was able to play golf during the  fall golf season this year. She also has a few more games left to play at Loyd Star as a softball and soccer player for the Hornets.

“There have been a lot of sad last-firsts. With each milestone I know it’s going to be bittersweet,” Burnette said. “It is ending but I’ll be heading to Co-Lin and it will be just as good.”

She will play softball for the Lady Wolves who won a National Junior College Championship this past softball season. Softball was always her number one pick for college. Co-Lin gave her chances to play in fall leagues and camps and was the right fit.

Burnette said she loved the team, coaches and environment. Her plans are to study nursing at Co-Lin and then possibly go on to nursing school at Ole Miss.

“I’ve been looking forward to it for a while. I’m ready to go,” Burnette said. “I watch a lot of nursing shows and I saw how my mom works with patients. I thought I would enjoy it for a long time. I love the medical field.”
