Fire risk increases today

BROOKHAVEN — It has been a few weeks since the last wildfire in Lincoln County. While the burn ban is over for the county, there are still dangerous fire conditions forecast today.

National Weather Service in Jackson warns the low humidity and gusty winds could allow for fire to spread quickly and get out of control. Brookhaven-Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency states they will see a “increased risk” for wildfires across the county today. Franklin, Copiah, Jefferson and Lawrence Counties are also at risk.

Nine out of 10 wildfires are human caused and thus preventable. Do not leave campfires unattended and extinguish them properly. Check the weather and wind before you plan to burn. Anyone who causes damage to other people’s property with a fire they start can be held liable.

Do not allow trailer chains to drag on the roadways as they could spark a grass fire. Dispose of cigarettes properly and not on the ground.
