BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln County and Southwest Mississippi should experience wintry precipitation this evening as an Artic Blast delivers cold weather to the area. National Weather Service in Jackson issued three weather advisories for the area from this morning until Tuesday and Wednesday.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Lincoln, Copiah, Franklin and Lawrence Counties until 6 a.m. Tuesday morning due to the chance of mixed wintry precipitation and wind chills. Sleet, snow and freezing rain could fall this afternoon which could make travel a hazard. NWS Jackson forecasts Brookhaven to get wintry mix precipitation between 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Drive carefully and slow down in slick conditions. Power outages could happen as the result of downed trees and limbs.

A hard freeze warning has also been issued for the area from Monday night until Wednesday at 6 a.m. Temperatures will remain near or below freezing across Mississippi Tuesday and lows will fall into single digits Wednesday morning. Those low temperatures could keep any precipitation frozen and make roads very slick. Residents should take steps to protect any plants and outdoor pipes from damage during the hard freeze.

A wind chill advisory is also in effect for southwest Mississippi. Lincoln County is under a wind chill advisory from 6 p.m. tonight until noon Tuesday. Wind chills could be as low as five below zero across the NWS Jackson coverage area.

Brookhaven is forecast to have 40 percent chance of precipitation this evening and 30 percent chance this afternoon. Lows will drop to 16 tonight and temps are forecast to reach 32 Tuesday. Those temperatures will drop again to 12 degrees Tuesday night.

Wednesday is forecast to reach a high of 44 and the low will be 26 Wednesday night.
