Lincoln County under a flood watch Wednesday, flooding likely

BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln County will be under a flood watch Wednesday from noon to 6 a.m. Thursday morning. Lawrence, Copiah and Franklin Counties are also under a flood watch issued by the National Weather Service.

Brookhaven-Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency shared a graphic from NWS Jackson Tuesday afternoon warning that flooding was likely Wednesday into Thursday.

Rain is expected Tuesday through Saturday but heavy rainfall will come Wednesday. Tuesday’s precipitation chance is 40 percent increasing to 70 percent in the evening. Tuesday rainfall amounts could be between a half inch to three quarters of an inch.

It is possible 4 to 8 inches of rainfall could fall in Lincoln County and more could be possible in localized areas. NWS Jackson forecasts a 100 percent chance of rain Wednesday. There is an 80 percent chance of rain Thursday and a 50 percent chance of rain Friday.

National Weather Service in Jackson warns street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers could be possible. Flash flooding is a concern for low lying urban areas and fields.

Severe storms could accompany the rain Wednesday afternoon and into the evening. NWS Jackson warns isolated severe storms could move through the area along with damaging wind gusts and quarter sized hail.
