Seven Brookhaven and Wesson students recently served as pages for the Mississippi Senate. Their visits were sponsored by Sen. Jason Barrett, of Brookhaven, or Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann. Pages generally run errands for officials and Senate staff.

Ann Elise Duncan of McComb attends Brookhaven Academy, and is the daughter of Greg and Melissa Duncan.

“I enjoyed getting to meet new people and our state’s legislators,” Duncan said. “I appreciate Mr. Jason Barrett for inviting me to come work with the Senate.”

Mara Grace Norwood of Wesson attends Wesson Attendance Center, and is the daughter of Brian and Babs Norwood.

“I loved getting to know the senators and learning about them and their beliefs,” Norwood said. “I really enjoyed getting to know my fellow pages. I recommend paging to anyone who is interested in politics.”

William Edward Phillips Jr. of Brookhaven is the son of William and Kathryn Phillips, and attends Brookhaven Academy.

“I liked networking and meeting our state’s legislators,” Phillips said. “It was a great experience and everyone I met was very nice. I am glad to have had this opportunity.”

Catherina “Eva” Mason of Brookhaven is the daughter of Robert and Amy Mason, and attends Brookhaven High.

“This week I had an amazing opportunity to page for Sen. Jason Barrett,” Mason said. “This entire week of paging gave me a chance to truly understand how our government works. And thanks to the countless other senators. There was always someone who offered an explanation for every event that took place this week. I hope to do this again and hope others are eager to begin paging for the Senate.”

Wilson Kent Calcote of Brookhaven attends Brookhaven Academy, and is the son of Colby and Kathleen Calcote.

“I really enjoyed being able to experience all of the senators in session and voting on bills,” Calcote said. “We also got to go on tours and visit the Civil Rights Museum. I have had a great week being a page and would like to do something like this again.”

Kennedy Elizabeth Powell of Brookhaven is the daughter of Mike and Rachel Powell, and attends Brookhaven High.

“This week I enjoyed meeting new people and learning about all the new bills being dropped,” Powell said. “I learned a lot about how bills are created and how each senator has their own special area to cover. I am very happy I got to have this experience.”

Clara Barton Calcote of Wesson is homeschooled, and is the daughter of Bryan and Sonya Calcote.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as a page for the Mississippi Senate. I enjoyed helping the senators and staff and learning about our legislative process,” she said. “Paging allowed me to experience firsthand the workings of our great government. I had a fantastic week!”
