The grandson of New Hebron Police Chief George Walker has died as the result of an ATV accident.

According to reports, 7-year-old Cruz Lewis was driving a side-by-side ATV alone when the wreck occurred. New Hebron Mayor Cindy Bryan said authorities worked extensively to help Lewis, but were unable to revive the boy.

Lewis, a second-grade student at New Hebron Attendance Center in Lawrence County, was the son of Kirk and Callie Lewis, and brother to Mercer Lewis.

“Cruz was just a special little boy,” said Bryan. “Everybody that knew him would say that. He always had a smile on his face and he was just full of life. With us being a small town, Chief Walker has worked many accidents and helped many families deal with loss. It’s our time to stand with his family.”

Counselors were at NHAC Tuesday to assist grieving students and staff.

Funeral arrangements for Lewis are Thursday, Feb. 29, visitation at New Hebron Baptist Church 5-8 p.m.; continued visitation Friday, March 1, 10-11 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in New Hebron Cemetery.
