BROOKHAVEN — Embers from the former Stahl-Urban building burning traveled approximately half a mile and started a fire at the Rex Pellet Mill location Monday evening. Rex Lumber Brookhaven General Manager Mark Isbell said that no product was lost in the fire at the pellet mill on WI Behan Road across from Great Southern Wood.
Images taken the night of the fire show piles of timber and wood chips while a fire burned other tree piles close to a tree line in the woodyard at the pellet mill. A road separates the main Rex Lumber mill from the pellet mill. Volunteer Firefighters and the Mississippi Forestry Commission were asked to keep the fire contained Monday night.
Fire Information for Resource Management Systems detected fire at the pellet mill from Monday night through Wednesday. By Thursday, the fire had cooled off enough where it was no longer detected by FIRMS.
Brookhaven Fire Chief Jeff Ainsworth said the fire was no longer burning actively Friday afternoon.
“The fire is contained but it is 2 acres of deep coals and ashes,” Ainsowrth said.
He added the rain Brookhaven got Friday morning would dry out quickly on the piles of hot coals.
The woodyard was a little over 2 acres in size. Rex Lumber referred to this wood yard as an “undeveloped field owned by Rex,” in a statement Wednesday.
