BROOKHAVEN — National Weather Service in Jackson warns of flash flooding this week. Southwest Mississippi is considered to be under a limited threat of flash floods and marginal risk of severe storms at the start of the Mississippi Spring Turkey season. 

NWS Jackson warns heavy rainfall could come late Thursday to Saturday night dumping two to four inches of rain with more in local thunderstorms. Localized flash flooding is possible with low lying areas and urban areas at risk. Minor river flooding is likely and moderate river flooding is possible with these storms.

Severe storms pose a marginal risk to the area. NWS Jackson warns the possible isolated severe storms could bring damaging wind and hail Friday morning. The hail could be as big as a half dollar size according to the national weather service.

At this time, there is a 60 percent chance of rain Thursday with showers and thunderstorms coming after 1 p.m. Thursday night may not be as wet with a 40 percent chance of rain.

Friday is the opening day of Mississippi’s spring turkey season for all hunters, youth hunters had their opener on March 8. Rain chances will be 80 percent for the area with gusts reaching 20 mph. Hunters might want to wear a pair of frog togs or other rain gear on opening day. Friday night’s rain chances look to hold steady at 80 percent. 

Saturday will have a 30 percent chance of rain but Saturday night will have a 70 percent chance of rain. Sunday will have a 50 percent chance of rain with showers and thunderstorms likely. 

Monday and Tuesday are forecast to be sunny at this time.
