BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln County’s new district attorney Brendon Adams invited supervisors to a fentanyl training session Wednesday. The training session will primarily be for law enforcement officers in the area and held in April.

Adams was elected to the District Attorney’s office and took over on January 1, 2024. He said he took the same fentanyl training course and learned a great deal about the drug.

The training will be free and held at the Lincoln Civic Center on April 4. Adams said the Mississippi Attorney General’s office and fentanyl task force team sponsored the event.

“Fentanyl is some bad stuff and as I’ve told others it is pure poison. We hope to teach the dangers, how officers can deal with it and how to use safeguards to protect themselves,” Adams said. “This class is good for law enforcement. They will learn about the deadliness of this stuff and how to safely use techniques to secure it. We hope to take what we learn and get the info out into schools and churches. I invite all of you to attend. It is a great class and very informative.”

Lincoln County had a scare with fentanyl in the jail last year, Sheriff Steve Rushing said. Adams said the drug can be disguised as pills, powder or other forms.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal depending on a person’s body size, tolerance and past usage. Adams said the lethal dosage was about half the size of a grain of rice.

“My plan is to start getting this out into public awareness,” Adams said.

The DEA reports that 150 people die everyday from overdoses related to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.
