LOYD STAR — Lincoln County Firefighters from Loyd Star and New Sight Volunteer Fire Departments worked to stop a grass fire Thursday afternoon. The call came in around 2:20 p.m. 

On scene, fire had burned an area of pine straw in front of a home and firefighters Collin Bingham, Johnny Smith and Austin Smith worked to keep the fire from spreading. Once the smoldering bases of pine trees were soaked with water, Bingham turned his attention to putting out a dead tree that was burning. 

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves declared March as Wildfire Prevention Month on March 1. According to the Mississippi Forestry Commission, 9 out of 10 wildfires are caused by human error. 

Loyd Star, Heucks Retreat and New Sight Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a grass fire Tuesday afternoon off of Homochitto Road after a burn got out of control. The Mississippi Forestry Commission was dispatched to the fire as the windy conditions and low humidity made it difficult for the fire to be contained.  

MFC reminds people to do their part in preventing wildfires. Here are a list of tips to keep in mind. 

• Check for local or statewide burn bans at mfc.ms.gov.
• Monitor the local weather forecast and refrain from burning on dry, windy days.
• Select a secure burn site away from flammable materials and surround it with bare dirt or gravel.
• Burn only untreated wood debris; plastic, rubber tires, or other manufactured materials may not be burned.
• Always have a nearby water source.
• Never leave a fire unattended.

The Lincoln County Fire Association will have a training session Thursday evening to prepare for large fire events such as the Stahl-Urban fire.
