Lincoln County volunteer firefighters train, fellowship

BROOKHAVEN — Firefighters with Zetus, Heucks Retreat and East Lincoln Volunteer Fire Departments trained together Thursday afternoon at the Lin-Brook Industrial Park. The training was to model the use of dump tanks in the event of a large fire out in the county.

Lincoln County Volunteer Firefighter Association president Jonathan Alford led the training.  Firefighters set up three dump tanks, which look similar to an above ground pool, and dumped water from tankers into the trucks.

At the same time, a pumper truck ran water to a deck gun while two jet siphons were set up to help relay the water from the dump tanks to the pumper.

“We wanted to provide county wide fire training so we can all get out here and have fun,” Alford said. “This was good timing because we had that big fire at Stahl-Urban. It is a way to make certain if we need water we would know how to shuttle water to dump tanks for a large fire out in the county.”

Alford became the association president last month after an election. He said his goal was to provide more county wide training for the volunteer fire departments. Loyd Star, Heucks Retreat, East Lincoln, Hog Chain, Bogue Chitto, Ruth, Zetus and New Sight Volunteer Fire Departments tend to work together on fires depending on the severity of the call. The training could help the departments lower their fire ratings which can save residents money on insurance.

Firefighters trained while spending time in conversation. The night eventually delved into reflection on previous fires such as the wildfire East Lincoln fought on the Lawrence/Lincoln County line this past fall.

Alford said the fellowship was important to him and one of his goals for the session. He hopes to have more training events.

“I remember seeing my dad in the fire department when they would get together as a county and do training,” Alford said. “I want to show it is fun again. We lose track sometimes of the fun and fellowship. We get so focussed on fighting fires. It is something I wanted to try and do more of as president.”
