Forecasted cold temperature will place in record books

BROOKHAVEN — National Weather Service in Jackson issued a freeze warning for Lincoln County as the low will plunge down to 31 degrees Tuesday night. It is cold enough to place in the record books.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the coldest low recorded in south Mississippi on March 18 was 28 degrees in 1960 and 1902. A low of 29 degrees took third place in 2005. If the low reaches 31 degrees it will tie the fourth and fifth coldest low on March 18 set in 1941 and 1928.

Technically, the temperature will reach 31 degrees Tuesday morning which would also tie for fifth place of the coldest low recorded on March 19. Last year, the temperature hit 30 degrees on March 19. The coldest low recorded on March 19 is 25 degrees set in 1923.
