BROOKHAVEN — Readers recently asked what will happen to Save-A-Lot following news that 601 Sports was remodeling the old Rite Aid building. The businesses are part of the Highland Square shopping area off of Brookway Boulevard and sparked several business questions.

Brookhaven Building Inspector David Fearn said he did not have any information on any changes or potential closing of Save-A-Lot. He confirmed 601 Sports had obtained a permit to remodel the former Rite Aid building.

Save-A-Lot has not returned a phone call requesting comments on if they plan to stay in Brookhaven or if they will close their location on Brookway Boulevard. Aldi has not responded to inquiries about any plans to open new stores in Mississippi and if Brookhaven will be one of those locations.

Aldi announced in March it plans to open 800 stores nationwide by 2028. One of their focus areas for opening new Aldi’s is in the Southeastern United States following an acquisition of Harveys and Winn-Dixie grocery stores according to a press release.

The move of 601 Sports to Rite Aid left readers asking if Five-Below had backed out of coming to Brookhaven.

Five-Below has not responded to an inquiry asking if they still plan to open in Brookhaven, where they plan to open and when. The company stated “We continue to monitor Brookhaven for the right opportunity to arise, however we have no specific updates to provide at this time,” in regards to those questions on Jan. 30, 2024.
