BROOKHAVEN — National Weather Service in Jackson warns strong wind could threaten Lincoln County and Southwest Mississippi this weekend. The weather forecast warns it is a limited threat.
Winds could reach sustained speeds of 20 mph and gusts of 30 to 40 mph. NWS Jackson forecasts these winds to be southerly and occur Saturday and Sunday mostly in the afternoon.
One concern with these winds is weakened trees and tree limbs may break and fall. The Mississippi Forestry Commission reported 12.5 million pine trees died from bugs and last year’s drought. Downed trees could fall on power lines and potentially spark grass fires.
High profile vehicles could become unstable in the wind gusts as well.
There is no chance of rain in the forecast for this weekend but rain chances could improve Monday. NWS Jackson forecasts a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday, mainly after 1 p.m.
