BROOKHAVEN — Lincoln, Lawrence, Franklin Regional Library will host a variety of fun summer activities for children this year. Children’s Librarian Patty Shelton said they will have a summer reading program and a summer library in June.

Registration for a free summer reading program “Adventures Begin at Your Library,” opens on May 6 and closes May 24. The program will start June 3. Shelton said the summer library programs do not require registration.

“The reading program is where they read a certain amount of books and get a prize. Summer library is when we have different activities,” Shelton said. “We will have a weather man coming this year, Animal Tails out of Florida will bring excotic animals and we will have story times as well.”

This year’s summer reading program will take kids on a journey across the US through reading and learning. Alaska, Washington D.C., South Dakota and Hawaii will be the stops on the program. Shelton, who loves to decorate the children’s library, said she plans to decorate for the reading program.

Her plan is to decorate with an outdoors theme and maybe turn the entryway into a camper although nothing has been finalized yet.

“The program encourages reading when school is out and encourages them to keep up with reading during the summer time,” Shelton said. “Students will get to visit a treasure chest after they read 25 books and then their name goes into a drawing for a bigger prize.”

Last year’s bigger prize was a kindle. Shelton has not officially determined what the bigger prize will be this year. Both the summer reading program and summer library will go from June 3 to June 27th.

Shelton added she is looking into starting Movie Mondays in July to keep the kids involved. Everyday in June there will be some sort of activity at the library for students.

She had one more reminder for students and parents. Carolyn Wilson, a Brookhaven native, will be in town for a book reading and signing at the children’s library. The book is titled “Justin & Friends Dinosaur Adventure.”
